Parents of Senior students have asked the counselling unit what this year’s announcements mean for UEC holders who want to study at a Malaysian public university.
This explainer sets out what was announced, and what is still unclear.
What was decided
In May 2026, the Cabinet decided that UEC holders who sit and pass SPM Bahasa Melayu and History may apply to selected public-university programmes in Chinese language, linguistics and Chinese studies, according to reports in The Vibes and the Borneo Post.
The Higher Education Minister said the national system is unchanged. The pathway is a route into selected courses, not formal recognition of the UEC.
What is still open
Reports differ on the grades required. Earlier descriptions mentioned a pass or a credit in the two SPM subjects. University requirements reported in August asked for more, including six A2 grades in UEC subjects.
Lian Hwa’s SPM track already offers Bahasa Melayu and History. Families who want to keep this pathway open should talk to the counselling unit before choosing Senior 1 subjects.
