A simple new moon intention ritual
Fifteen minutes, one candle and a piece of paper: a ritual you can do on the night of any new moon.

The new moon is the point in the cycle when the moon sits between the Earth and the sun and its lit side faces away from us, so the sky is darkest. Many earth-based traditions treat it as a time to begin things. You do not need any special tools for this ritual; a candle, paper and pen are enough.
Before you start
Check the date. Moon phases are the same everywhere on Earth, but the clock time shifts by time zone, so look up the new moon time in Geoscience Australia moon phase tables. Any time on that day or the following evening works.
- A white or silver candle
- A sheet of paper and a pen
- A glass or bowl of water
- Optional: a grounding stone such as black tourmaline
The ritual
- Clear a small space and open a window for a minute to let fresh air through.
- Light the candle and sit for three slow breaths.
- Write three intentions in the present tense, as if they are already true. Keep each to one line.
- Read them aloud once, then fold the paper towards you.
- Drink a little of the water to close, and keep the paper somewhere you will see it at the full moon.
At the full moon
About two weeks later, unfold the paper and note what has moved. Many people use the full moon for release, so this is a natural moment to let go of the intention that no longer fits.
