Whitening is the single biggest change most people can make to their smile — and the gentlest. But the market is full of high-street kiosks and salon "treatments" that are, quite simply, illegal.
What UK law says
In the UK, tooth whitening may only be carried out by a registered dental professional. The gel used must contain no more than 6% hydrogen peroxide, the first application must be done by a dentist, and whitening cannot be provided to under-18s except to treat disease. Anyone offering whitening in a shopping centre or beauty salon without a dentist is breaking the law — and using products that are either too weak to work or unsafe to use.
How supervised whitening works
- We check your teeth and gums are healthy enough to whiten.
- We take an impression and make custom trays that fit only your teeth, protecting your gums.
- You whiten gradually at home over two to three weeks, with our gel and our guidance.
- We review the result and set you up to maintain it.
Managing sensitivity
A little sensitivity during whitening is normal and temporary. Gradual home whitening is far kinder than a single high-strength "power" session, which is why we prefer it. If your teeth are sensitive, tell us — we can slow the process down.
Whitening is also the perfect first step before any bonding or veneers, because a brighter base means we need to add less of everything else. Learn more about whitening at Solene.
