Lian Hwa’s Mandarin debate team reached the semi-final of a national inter-school competition in Kuala Lumpur this month, the furthest the school has gone in the competition.
The team of four Senior 1 students won five rounds before losing the semi-final on a split decision.
Preparation
The team met three evenings a week from June, with coaching from two Chinese-language teachers and a former national debater from the alumni association.
"We read the news every morning and argued about it at lunch," said team captain Lee Zhi Hao. "Our friends got tired of us."
