Crooked teeth: should you straighten them or cover them?

The most common cosmetic question we hear — and why the answer is usually 'move them first'.

Crooked teeth: should you straighten them or cover them?

If your teeth are crowded or a little crooked, you have two broad routes: move them into line with clear aligners, or reshape and cover them with veneers. Both can produce a straight-looking smile. But they are very different decisions, and for healthy teeth one is almost always more sensible.

The case for straightening first

Aligners move the teeth you already have into a better position. Nothing is cut down. Once they are straight, you may find you are perfectly happy — no veneers needed. And if you do still want to change colour or shape, a straightened tooth needs far less preparation for a veneer than a rotated one, so you keep more of your own tooth.

  • More conservative — little or no drilling.
  • Often removes the need for veneers entirely.
  • Improves cleanability and long-term health, not just looks.
  • Planned in 3D, so you see the outcome before you start.

When veneers still make sense

Veneers earn their place when you want to change more than position — colour that whitening cannot fix, worn or misshapen teeth, or a fuller change to proportion. In those cases, masking mild crowding with veneers can be reasonable. But covering significantly crooked teeth with veneers alone often means aggressive preparation, which we avoid where we can.

The Axis approach

For most crowding, we recommend a short course of aligners, then whitening, then a little bonding if needed — in that order. It is more conservative, longer-lasting and usually cheaper than a full set of veneers. If a case genuinely calls for veneers, we will say so, and we will design them properly.

Straightening first often means restoring far less later. It is the quiet win in a lot of makeovers.
