Sometimes the teeth are fine and it is the gum line that unbalances a smile — too much gum on show, or an uneven margin that makes teeth look short or mismatched. Gum recontouring reshapes the gum line to reveal more of the tooth and even out the frame.

We use a soft-tissue laser, which is precise, gentle and usually needs only local anaesthetic, with minimal bleeding and quick healing. It is frequently combined with veneers or bonding as part of a makeover, but can also stand alone.

Gum recontouring — your questions

Does gum recontouring hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic and most patients feel little to nothing during it. Any tenderness afterward is mild and short-lived.

Will the gum grow back?

Where we are removing excess tissue over healthy tooth, the result is stable. If bone needs adjusting for a very gummy smile we will explain that at assessment.

Can it be done with veneers?

Yes — recontouring first to set the frame, then veneers or bonding, is a common and effective combination.
