How long do veneers last — and what actually makes them last longer

The short answer: well-made porcelain veneers commonly last 10–15 years, and often considerably longer. But that number hides the more useful truth — how long yours last depends far more on design, your bite and your habits than on the porcelain itself.

What shortens a veneer's life

• Grinding and clenching. Unmanaged, this is the number one cause of chipped or debonded veneers. A nightguard is not optional if you grind.
• A bite that was not planned. If the way your teeth meet is not designed into the case, the veneers take forces they were not meant to. This is exactly what 3D planning prevents.
• Poor hygiene. Veneers do not decay, but the tooth behind and the gum margin do. Decay under a veneer is what ends it early.

What makes them last

1. Design that respects your bite. We plan how the teeth meet before we make anything, so the porcelain is not overloaded.
2. A nightguard if you grind. Cheap insurance against the most common failure.
3. Regular hygiene visits. Protecting the margins keeps the tooth underneath healthy.
4. Sensible habits. Do not open packaging or bite your nails with them — porcelain is strong, not indestructible.

The porcelain rarely fails on its own. What fails is an unplanned bite or an unprotected grinder.
