Veneers vs composite bonding: an honest comparison
Both reshape and refresh your teeth. They differ in cost, longevity and how much of your tooth they touch. Here is how to choose.

Composite bonding and porcelain veneers can produce a strikingly similar result on the day. Where they differ is everything that comes after — cost, lifespan, stain resistance and how much of your own tooth is involved. Neither is 'better'. They suit different people and different goals.
Composite bonding, in short
Tooth-coloured resin is sculpted directly onto your teeth, usually in a single visit, usually with no drilling and no anaesthetic. It is additive and reversible, which makes it the most conservative cosmetic option and a great first step.
- Cost: from about $350 per tooth.
- Lifespan: roughly 4–8 years before refresh.
- Stain resistance: good, but less than porcelain — it can pick up colour over time.
- Best for: small chips, minor gaps, worn edges, younger patients, and budgets that favour a reversible change.
Porcelain veneers, in short
Thin shells of layered ceramic are bonded to the front of the teeth. They require a design-and-preparation process and are less reversible, but they last longer and hold their colour beautifully.
- Cost: from about $1,600 per veneer.
- Lifespan: commonly 10–15 years and often longer.
- Stain resistance: excellent — porcelain does not stain like composite.
- Best for: permanent stains, larger shape changes, and anyone wanting a long-lasting, colour-stable result.
How we decide with you
At a consult we look at three things: how much change you want, how long you want it to last, and how conservative you want to be. Often the honest recommendation is to start with bonding, or to straighten first with aligners and then decide whether you still want porcelain at all. Sometimes veneers genuinely are the right tool. The Smile Timeline Planner is a good place to see how these options combine.
What we will never do is talk you into the more expensive option for its own sake. The best cosmetic dentistry is the least a case needs.
