Basic economy bag rules, explained

By the Caracol team · Airline rules · Updated 2026-10-26

The cheapest ticket on a US airline often looks the same on the search page. The bag rules behind it are not. Here is what each airline's own baggage page said on 2026-10-26 about the lowest fare.

DeltaIncludedOne free carry-on and one personal item; on Basic Economy the carry-on may be gate-checked free if bins are full.

What it means for your bag

On the airlines marked "extra cost", the personal item is the only free bag. That is where a bag built to the personal-item limit pays for itself: on those fares, a carry-on is charged per flight.

On airlines that include a carry-on, a personal item still matters. It is the bag that stays at your feet with your laptop, jacket and snacks.

Fees and rules change often. Check the airline's own page, linked in the table, when you book.
