Pigmentation & Melasma
Sun spots, melasma and post-acne marks — treated by diagnosis, not by promo.

Not all brown patches are the same — and treating the wrong one with the wrong laser makes it darker. Sun spots, melasma, post-inflammatory marks and dermal pigmentation each need different tools and, crucially, different expectations. Avelia’s pigmentation clinic is led by doctors trained in skin-of-colour laser work, because Malaysian skin (Fitzpatrick III–V) punishes aggressive settings.
Is this you?
- Brown patches on cheeks that darken with sun (likely melasma)
- Discrete dark spots from years of Malaysian sun
- Marks left behind by acne or insect bites
- Overall dullness and uneven tone
- Grey-brown patches present since youth (dermal pigmentation)
If you’re unsure, the treatment finder on our treatments page can point you in the right direction — and the consultation confirms it.

How we treat pigmentation differently
Diagnosis under proper light
Wood’s lamp and dermoscopic examination to classify your pigment: epidermal, dermal or mixed. This ten-minute step is why two patients with "the same" patches get completely different plans.
Melasma: control first, laser later
Melasma is a chronic, hormone- and light-driven condition. We start with tinted broad-spectrum sunscreen, prescription lightening therapy (hydroquinone cycles or non-HQ alternatives) and oral tranexamic acid where suitable — for at least 8 weeks — before any laser. Lasering unstable melasma is how it gets worse.
The right laser at the right settings
Low-fluence pico laser for melasma maintenance, standard pico or Q-switched for sun spots and post-acne marks, longer wavelengths for dermal pigment. All laser work at Avelia is doctor-performed.
Maintenance you can actually keep up
Pigmentation returns if you stop guarding against it. We finish every programme with a realistic maintenance plan — sunscreen you’ll actually wear, and a quarterly review rather than an endless package.
