Short, regular sessions beat long, occasional ones. A simple plan for the first twelve weeks.

At-home masks put out less light than clinic panels. They make up for it with frequency: you can use them every day, at home, without booking anything. So the most useful question is not how long a session should be, but how often you will actually do it.
Follow the device's own protocol
Session length and frequency are set by each device's output, so follow the instructions for the mask you own. The Lumen Mask runs a four-minute session and is designed for once-a-day use. Doubling up does not double the effect, and the mask will not start a second session within two hours.
A first twelve weeks
Weeks 1 to 4. Daily if your skin is comfortable. If you have sensitive or deeper skin, start at three sessions a week.
Weeks 5 to 8. Daily. Take a photo in the same light and position each week.
Weeks 9 to 12. Compare your week 1 and week 12 photos side by side before deciding what is working.
A reminder at the same time each evening makes the habit easier to keep.
Why consistency matters more than intensity
A 2025 meta-analysis in JAMA Dermatology pooled six randomized trials of at-home LED devices for acne and found the studies used a range of schedules; the authors called for larger trials to settle the best settings. What the trials share is regular use over several weeks. Treat any mask as a routine, not a one-off treatment.

Red vs near-infrared light: what each wavelength does
Red light you can see. Near-infrared you cannot. Here is why most masks use both, and what the studies actually tested.
