When someone wants to fix crowded or crooked front teeth quickly, veneers can look like the fast answer. Sometimes they are. But reaching straight for porcelain to disguise a position problem often means removing healthy tooth to make a crooked tooth sit where a straight one would have sat anyway. There is frequently a kinder order.
What alignment does for a cosmetic result
Moving teeth into the right position first means that any bonding or veneers afterwards can be thinner, or skipped entirely. Instead of grinding a tooth down to change where it appears to be, we simply move it there. You keep more of your own tooth, and the final result tends to look more natural because it is working with your anatomy rather than against it.
‘But I do not want a year of braces’
Understandable — and often unnecessary. Many cosmetic alignment cases are about the front teeth only and finish far faster than full orthodontics. Clear aligners are near-invisible and removable, so they fit around work and life. For the right person, a few months of aligners plus a little whitening and bonding is the whole makeover — at a fraction of the cost of a mouthful of veneers.
When veneers still make sense
- When the shape or colour of the teeth needs changing as well as the position.
- When teeth are worn, chipped or already heavily restored.
- When time is genuinely too short for alignment before an event.
The point is not that alignment is always right and veneers always wrong. It is that the two should be considered together, as one design. That is why every case here is looked at by both a specialist orthodontist and our clinical director before anything is decided.
