Halsted Career Studio

About

A studio, not a funnel.

Founded by a recruiter who read forty thousand resumes and kept meeting the same person: capable, accomplished, and quietly aiming at the wrong target.

Where this comes from

Halsted Career Studio started with a pattern its founder could not stop seeing. Mara Quinlan spent ten years in recruiting — agency first, then senior in-house for a national health system — interviewing thousands of professionals. The striking ones were not the bad candidates. They were the excellent candidates applying, with total competence, for jobs they visibly did not want: the same role at a different logo, chosen because asking a bigger question felt indulgent.

Recruiting has no mechanism for that conversation. The industry is paid to fill the seat, not to ask whether the seat is right. So in 2016 Mara trained as a coach, rented a one-room office above a florist on North Halsted Street, and built the mechanism.

What we believe

Evidence beats introspection. You cannot think your way to a career decision from a couch; you can test your way to one from the real world. Our method runs on cheap experiments — conversations, shadow days, micro-projects — because the texture of actual Tuesdays is the only data that predicts whether you will like a job.

Honesty beats enthusiasm. About one in five clarity clients hears us conclude that their current role is right and its shape is wrong. We publish our prices, publish how our statistics are counted, and will tell you in the free consultation if coaching is not your tool. A studio that runs on referrals can afford honesty; it cannot afford anything else.

Mid-story is an advantage. Most of our clients are 32 to 55. The industry treats that as a complication; we treat it as capital. You have evidence about yourself that no 24-year-old has. The work is reading it properly.

The room

1872 N Halsted St, Suite 3

The studio is a second-floor loft in Lincoln Park: white brick, tall windows, two armchairs per room and deliberately no desk between them. Two blocks north of the Armitage Brown Line stop. Street parking on Halsted; the door is between the florist and the coffee bar - buzz Suite 3.

Sessions run 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Monday to Thursday, until 4pm Fridays, with Saturday mornings by arrangement. Around 60% of clients meet us on video instead — the studio has clients in eleven states — and switching between formats is always fine.
