Where you are
The gap is a fact. It is not a verdict.
Three years out for a child. Five for a parent's illness. Two for your own health, or a move, or a life that simply did not fit around a job for a while. Re-entry is a solved problem - but it does not feel that way at 11pm on the job boards.
What actually worries employers (and what does not)
Hiring managers care about two things: can you do the work now, and will you stay. The gap itself ranks far below candidates' fears suggest - what reads badly is not the gap but apologizing for it. "I took four years out to care for my father; here is what I kept sharp and here is why this role, now" beats any amount of resume camouflage.
The story, told forward
We build your re-entry story the same way we build career-change stories: forward, not defensively. What the break gave you goes on the table alongside what it cost - many returners come back with sharper priorities and better boundaries than they left with, and both are assets in the right room.
Skills: audit, not assumption
Most returners overestimate the decay. A structured skills audit - what you did before, what changed in the field while you were out, what closes the gap - usually yields a short, finite list: one tool to refresh, one certification to renew, a vocabulary shift. Finite lists beat vague dread.
The search, sized to your life
Re-entry searches have extra variables: hours, flexibility, and the confidence rebuild that comes only from live conversations. We sequence the warm-up deliberately - low-stakes conversations first, interviews later - and target employers with genuine returner track records, not just returner marketing.

FAQ
Asked from exactly where you are
How do I show the gap on my resume?
Honestly and briefly: a one-line entry naming it (career break for family caregiving, 2021-2025) with anything professionally relevant kept alive underneath - board roles, freelance, coursework, PTA treasurer counts more than you think. Elena formats these every week; the mechanics take one session.
Am I too old to be hired?
Age bias exists; pretending otherwise would insult you. It is also survivable and routinely survived - targeting employers who value judgment, leading with recent evidence, and refusing to pre-reject yourself are the working countermeasures.
