Shift story

Hospital Operations DirectorNonprofit COO

Marcus, 44

“I had been applying like it was 2009 - fifty applications into portals. The Sprint had me have eleven conversations. The job came from conversation eight.”

Marcus did not need clarity. Twenty years in hospital operations, the last six as a director, and a precise ambition: operations leadership at a mission-driven nonprofit, ideally healthcare-adjacent. What he needed was a search that worked, because six months of portal applications had produced two screening calls and a bruised ego.

The Sprint's first move was subtraction. His target list went from "nonprofits in Chicago" to forty named organizations big enough to need a real COO and small enough that a director could credibly step up. His positioning story stopped apologizing for the corporate years and started pricing them: this is what disciplined operations looks like, and your mission deserves it.

Then the part he dreaded: warm outreach. Mara's scripts got him past the feeling that networking meant imposing. Eleven conversations in eight weeks - former colleagues, board members, one cold-but-warm email to a COO whose annual report he had genuinely read. No asks for jobs; asks for twenty minutes of how-does-this-sector-actually-work.

Conversation eight was with the executive director of a community-health nonprofit whose operations lead was retiring within the year. The role was not posted. Three meetings later it effectively existed for him.

The offer came in respectable and low. Priya's negotiation prep - and a session with the Offer Decoder that priced the thinner nonprofit benefits honestly - produced a counter anchored on the true annual value gap. The revised package landed $19,000 over the first offer, plus a professional development budget.

Marcus started as COO seven months after his first session. His advice to portal applicants is unprintable, but the polite version is: talk to humans.
