Local SEO Starter Kit

The exact steps to show up when nearby customers search.
When someone nearby searches for what you sell, you want to be the business they call. That is local SEO. Most of it is free and within your control. This kit covers the three things that matter most: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your citations. Do these and you will get more calls than most local competitors.
Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important thing in local search. It is what shows up in the map pack and on the right of search results. A complete, active profile beats a neglected one almost every time.
Claim and verify your profile at google.com/business, then work through the list below. Completeness is a ranking factor, so fill in everything.
Use your exact business name, the same everywhere online.
Pick the most specific primary category, then add relevant secondary ones.
Add your real address and service areas, and your opening hours.
Write a description with the services you offer and the areas you serve.
Upload at least 10 real photos: storefront, team, work, products.
Add your services or products with short descriptions and prices.
Turn on messaging so people can contact you straight from search.
Reviews
Reviews are the second biggest factor, and the one most businesses ignore. You do not need hundreds, you need a steady trickle of recent, genuine ones. The simplest system is to ask every happy customer, by WhatsApp, with a direct link.
Get your review link from your Business Profile (Ask for reviews, copy link). Then use a script like these:
After a job: 'Hi [name], so glad you are happy with [work]. If you have 30 seconds, a quick Google review really helps a small business like ours: [link]. Thank you!'
Gentle follow-up: 'Hi [name], no pressure at all, just following up in case you had a moment for that review: [link].'
Reply to every review, good or bad. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint builds more trust than a wall of five stars.
Citations and directories
A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number online. Consistent citations tell Google you are a real, established business. The golden rule: your name, address and phone number must be identical everywhere, down to the punctuation.
Google Business Profile (done above).
Facebook Page and Instagram, with the same address and phone.
Waze and Apple Maps.
Local directories: the big general directories and your industry bodies.
Any chambers of commerce or association you belong to.
Your own website footer and contact page, matching exactly.
Monthly maintenance routine
Local SEO is not a one-off. Thirty minutes a month keeps you ahead of competitors who set and forget. Put it in your calendar.
Post one update or offer to your Google Business Profile.
Add two or three fresh photos.
Ask three recent customers for a review.
Reply to any new reviews and questions.
Check your NAP is still consistent on your top five listings.
