Test-drive a new career for under $200

When I finally admitted I wanted out of engineering, my imagined next step was enormous: quit, retrain, start over, hope. That plan was so expensive and terrifying that I did the sensible thing and postponed it for two years while being quietly miserable.

What actually moved me - and what I now build with every client - was almost embarrassingly small: a series of cheap experiments, each designed to answer one question about a possible future before I bet anything real on it.

Why experiments beat research

Reading about a field tells you about the field's marketing. Experiments tell you about the Tuesday afternoons. The gap between the two is where career changes go to die eighteen months in - the moment you discover the actual texture of the work you idealized. An experiment moves that discovery from month eighteen to week three, and reprices it from a salary to a weekend.

The three rungs

Rung one: structured conversations ($0). Not "networking" - investigation. Two or three people currently doing the work, twenty minutes each, with real questions: What does a normal Tuesday look like? What surprised you most after switching? What do people romanticize about this that turns out wrong? What would make you leave? People say yes to these calls far more often than cold-call dread predicts - being asked genuine questions about one's work is rare and mildly flattering.

Rung two: proximity ($0-50). A shadow day, a volunteer shift, sitting in on a community of practice. One client tested compliance work by shadowing a contact for a single day - and learned in six hours what no article would have told her: she loved the investigation, and could not stand the meeting load. Direction adjusted, resignation avoided.

Rung three: the micro-project ($50-200). Do a tiny, real version of the work for a real person. Rebuild one training module. Run a five-user usability study for a nonprofit's website. Keep the books for a friend's food truck for one quarter. The micro-project answers the only question that matters - do I like doing this, and can I produce something someone values? - and it leaves an artifact. Every portfolio that lands a career changer's first role starts as one of these.

Design rules

One question per experiment, written down before you start - "would I enjoy the client-facing side?" not "is this my passion?" A deadline measured in weeks. A cost cap. And a verdict at the end: promote the direction, adjust it, or kill it. Killed directions are wins; each one was a mis-aimed resignation you did not send.
