The first 30 days after a layoff: a former HR director's checklist

I have sat in the room for three reductions in force - on the side of the table nobody wants to be on either. What struck me every time was how much of the damage happened after the meeting: not from the layoff itself, but from decisions made in the first fog-bound month. So here is the sequence, in the order that protects you.

Week one: paperwork before pride

Do not sign the severance agreement in the meeting. You are almost always given days to review (if you are over 40, US law typically requires 21 for agreements with a release of age claims). Read it rested. Understand what you are releasing. If the numbers are significant or a non-compete is attached, an employment attorney's flat-fee review is worth every dollar - coaches work alongside attorneys here, never instead of them.

File for unemployment the same week. It is an insurance benefit you paid for, not a judgment. Severance may affect timing in your state; file anyway and let the system calculate.

Solve health coverage deliberately. COBRA is one option, not the default - marketplace plans are often cheaper, and a layoff opens a special enrollment window. Put an hour into the comparison.

Ask about the quiet benefits. Outplacement support, accrued-PTO payout, the professional development stipend, references policy, vesting dates. Companies rarely volunteer the full list; a polite email to HR with specific questions frequently surfaces money.

Week two: the story, in two sentences

Before you talk to anyone professionally, script the two-sentence version: what happened, said plainly, with the shame removed - because there is genuinely nothing shameful in it. "My role was eliminated in a restructuring that cut sixty positions. I am taking a focused look at what is next." Rehearse until it comes out level. This sentence is infrastructure: every conversation for the next six months stands on it.

Weeks two and three: stabilize, do not sprint

The adrenaline says apply everywhere immediately. Applications written in that state smell of it - I have read them by the hundred. Take a deliberate beat: sleep, move, tell the people close to you, build the simple budget that tells you your actual runway (it is usually longer than the panic estimates). This is a beat, not a drift: one to three weeks, on the calendar, with an end date.

Week four: begin - in the right order

Targets before materials, materials before applications, conversations above all. And one honest checkpoint before you sprint: was this job one you would have chosen again? A surprising number of clients admit, once the shock fades, that the layoff ended something they had been enduring.
