Most people arrive having already decided they want clear aligners. Often they’re right — but not always, and part of my job is to say so. Here’s how I actually weigh it up.
Appearance
This is aligners’ biggest advantage. They’re nearly invisible, which for adults in client-facing work can be the deciding factor. If you’d like braces but the look worries you, tooth-coloured ceramic braces are a middle ground — discreet, though not invisible.
Comfort and lifestyle
Aligners are removable, so you eat and brush normally and there are no wires to irritate your cheeks. The trade-off is discipline: they only work if you wear them around 22 hours a day. If you know you’ll leave them out, fixed braces remove the temptation.
What each does best
- Aligners excel at mild-to-moderate crowding, spacing and relapse after previous braces. Modern attachments have widened what they can do considerably.
- Braces still have the edge for complex rotations, significantly impacted teeth and large bite corrections — cases where precise, continuous control matters.
Cost and time
At Enara, braces start from RM4,500 and clear aligners from RM7,500 for light cases, with full aligner treatment from RM11,000. Aligners tend to cost more because of the laboratory and planning involved. Treatment time is similar for comparable cases — anywhere from six months to two years.
The part that matters most
Whichever appliance you choose, the result depends on the plan behind it and on being seen in person, not just through an app. This is the real risk with mail-order aligner services: there’s no one watching a tooth that isn’t moving as expected. A small mid-course correction is often what separates a good result from an excellent one — and you can only make it if someone is looking.
