Do veneers ruin your teeth? What preparation really involves

Type “veneers” into any social platform and you will meet the pegs: teeth filed to tapered stumps, usually filmed abroad, usually captioned as veneers. Those are crown preparations — a different procedure with a different purpose — and they are the single biggest source of fear in my consultation room.

What veneer preparation actually removes

A modern minimal-preparation veneer removes 0.3 to 0.5 of a millimetre from the front surface — within the enamel layer, which on a front tooth runs roughly a millimetre deep. The tooth keeps its shape, its strength and its nerve. In selected cases (small teeth, spacing, no colour correction needed) preparation can approach zero. It is still not nothing: enamel does not regenerate, and I say the word “irreversible” in every consultation, deliberately.

When veneers do go wrong

Three honest scenarios. Over-preparation into dentine — the bond is weaker and sensitivity likelier; this is a technique failure, and it is why you should ask any dentist to show you their preparation photos, not just their afters. Veneering across untreated crowding — “instant orthodontics” — which can demand heavy reduction that alignment would have avoided; Case No. 063 in our gallery got two veneers instead of eight because he accepted nine months of Invisalign first. And veneers over unhealthy gums, which is simply sequencing malpractice: health first, always.

The questions that protect you

Ask how much reduction is planned, in millimetres, per tooth. Ask whether alignment first would reduce the count. Ask who makes the ceramics and whether a trial smile is included. Any cosmetic dentist worth their fee will enjoy answering — the ones who bristle have answered too.

Dr Mara Ellison is Auvera’s principal cosmetic dentist. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks; a second opinion from an appropriately qualified practitioner is always reasonable.
