Porcelain or composite veneers? An honest comparison

Every week someone sits in my chair holding two quotes: porcelain veneers at four times the price of composite. The obvious question — “is porcelain really four times better?” — has a genuinely useful answer, and it is not the one either material’s fans give.

The five-line comparison

Cost: composite from $495 per tooth here; porcelain from $2,150. Lifespan: composite 5–7 years before refresh; porcelain 10–15. Repair: composite re-layers in one visit; a fractured porcelain veneer is a remake. Stain resistance: porcelain wins outright — glazed ceramic shrugs off coffee that resin absorbs. Reversibility: composite bonds to untouched enamel and can be removed; porcelain requires preparation, however minimal, that does not grow back.

What actually decides it

Not the material — the case. A chipped corner, worn edges, a modest gap: composite delivers most of the result for a fraction of the fee, today, reversibly. Case No. 089 in our gallery is six bonded edges for around $3,200; porcelain would have been beautiful and unnecessary.

Deep discolouration, larger shape changes, or a patient who wants to stop thinking about their teeth for a decade: porcelain. The per-year arithmetic surprises people — $2,150 over twelve years is cheaper than $495 re-layered every five, once you count the appointments.

The question to ask any dentist

“What would you do to this tooth in your mouth?” If the answer is a material rather than a reason, keep asking. Roughly a third of veneer consultations at Auvera end with no veneers at all — whitening, bonding, or alignment first. The gallery shows several of them, priced.
