Why five small lifts beat one heroic one
Your annual revenue is a chain of multiplications: leads × conversion × average sale × purchases per year. Gross profit is that chain × margin. Improve any single link by 10% and profit rises about 10%. Improve all five by 10% and the gains multiply: 1.1 × 1.1 × 1.1 × 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.61 — a 61% profit rise from five changes small enough that customers barely notice any of them.
This is the oldest arithmetic in business coaching, and it stays in use because it reframes the question. “Double my profit” sounds like a moonshot; “find 10% in each of five places” is a quarter’s work. A price test here, a follow-up rhythm there, one reactivation letter to lapsed customers — none heroic, all compounding.
Two honest caveats. First, the margin lever is the strongest in practice — a price rise flows straight to margin and lifts average sale, which is why our engagements usually start there (the price-rise maths piece walks through it). Second, the calculator holds your margin rate constant on the uplift; in the real world some lifts cost something to win, which is exactly the kind of thing a coach makes you cost properly.
