Blood pressure and heart risk

A number you can actually act on, instead of "a bit high".

High blood pressure has no symptoms until it has caused damage, which is the entire reason it is worth measuring in someone who feels perfectly well. It is also one of the few things in medicine where the treatment is genuinely well proven.

What we try to replace is the vague conversation. "Borderline" is not a number. A ten-year cardiovascular risk percentage is.

One reading is not a diagnosis

Blood pressure measured once in a clinic is an unreliable guide — white-coat effect is real and common. Before anyone starts lifelong medication here, we confirm it with 24-hour ambulatory monitoring: you are fitted in the morning, wear it for a day, and bring it back.

£180 including the report. It is the single most useful £180 in this building.

What we measure alongside it

Cholesterol and lipids, HbA1c, kidney function, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio, and a 12-lead ECG. Together those turn a blood pressure reading into an actual risk picture, and they change the treatment threshold.

The number that matters

Your estimated risk of a heart attack or stroke in the next ten years, calculated from your own figures. It is the number that decides whether medication is worth it, and it is the number that shows you what stopping smoking or shifting eight kilos is actually worth — usually far more than people expect.

What happens if it is high

A plan with a date on it. Lifestyle changes that are specific and countable, medication where it is indicated, and a review at four to six weeks rather than "come back in a year". Most people need one or two adjustments before the numbers settle.

FAQs

Questions people ask

My reading is high at home but fine here. Which is right?

Usually the home or ambulatory readings. That is exactly why we confirm with 24-hour monitoring before treating.

Will I be on tablets for life?

Often, but not always — some people come off after sustained weight loss or when another cause is treated. It is reviewed, not assumed.

Do you do calcium scoring or cardiac CT?

We do not do it here, but we refer for it where it would genuinely change the decision, and we quote the cost before you agree.
