We hold appointments back every weekday specifically for people who woke up needing one. They are released at 07:30 for the morning clinic and at 12:30 for the afternoon, and on a normal day there are still some left at lunchtime.
Dr Callum Braid runs most of this clinic. He spent four years in emergency medicine before general practice, which is the right background for the job: the point of a same-day appointment is to work out quickly whether this is nothing, something, or something urgent.

Same-day slots appear on the Same-Week Board first thing. Reception can also triage you by phone.

A GP calls you back within the hour and decides whether you need to be seen here, elsewhere, or at all.

Tests we can do on site are done on site, so you rarely leave and come back.

Elspeth trained in Edinburgh and spent eleven years as a partner in an NHS Lothian practice in the north of the city before opening Ravelston Health in 2013. She started it for a simple reason: she was tired of ten-minute appointments and of telling people the wait for a scan would be measured in months.
FAQs
Same-day appointments: common questions
What counts as same-day?
Chest infections, urinary infections, rashes, ear and throat problems, a new lump, an injury from the weekend, a flare of something you already have. If you are not sure, phone and ask.
What is not appropriate for us?
Chest pain, breathlessness at rest, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, a very unwell child. That is 999 or NHS 24 on 111. We will tell you plainly if you have come to the wrong place.
Can you see me if I have never been here before?
Yes. There is no registration requirement and no membership requirement.
