About the role

Everything published here is written for somebody who is busy and does not care about the industry. Short sentences, the point first, no hype, and no sentence that exists to sound clever.

You work from a brief, so you are not deciding the topic. What you decide is how to make a dull subject clear and worth finishing.

There is no application window on this role. It is open until it is filled.

People in this role work on Seed Light's Content Marketing projects.

Responsibilities

  • Write website pages from a brief, in plain English
  • Write blog posts and guides against a keyword brief
  • Rewrite client copy that says nothing
  • Check facts and figures before they go on a live page
  • Keep a piece consistent with the client voice rather than your own

Requirements

  • Writing samples we can read, business writing rather than fiction
  • You can explain a product without hype
  • You understand how search intent shapes a page
  • You take an edit without taking it personally
  • You hit a deadline, or say early that you will not

Nice to have

  • You have written for trades, clinics, property or e-commerce
  • You have used AI drafting and know where it needs rewriting
  • You can write ad copy as well as long form

Tools

Google Docs, Search Console, Ahrefs or Semrush, WordPress, Grammarly. The licences and subscriptions the job needs are paid for, and knowing every one of these already is not expected.

Your first three months

  • Month 1. Blog posts and service pages against existing briefs, with close editing.
  • Month 2. You write the harder pages, and you edit rather than being edited.
  • Month 3. You hold the voice on a set of accounts and brief other writers.

Questions about this role

Questions candidates usually ask before applying. If yours is not here, add it to the message box on the form.

The work can be paid per piece or per month, depending on whether you join as an employee or contractor. The arrangement is agreed before you commit to the role.

AI is available to content writers for research and drafting, but its use does not replace checking the work. Send a relevant sample that explains where you used AI, which parts you reviewed or changed, the judgement you applied and what you learned.

No subject expertise is required at the start. The content writer must read the brief, ask useful questions, check claims and state when a source is missing. The job is to learn enough to write accurately without pretending to be the expert.

The content writer role creates search-led guides, articles and answer pages. The copywriter role focuses on persuasive commercial copy across campaigns and sales pages.

Expect close editing at first, on voice more than grammar. It settles quickly, and the goal is that you can hold a client voice without being edited into it.

No, although you have to get it right. That usually means one short conversation with somebody who does the work, and saying when a claim cannot be supported.

Useful samples are two or three pieces of business writing, ideally covering subjects you did not personally care about. The selection should show your writing in a business context while demonstrating that personal interest in the subject was unnecessary for completing the work.
