About the role
This role starts before the visual design does. What is the person trying to finish, what is in their way, what does the screen need to show, and in what order. Wireframes and flows first, screens after.
Most of it is the harder end of the work here: booking flows, portals, dashboards and checkouts, where a confusing screen costs the client real money rather than looking untidy.
Responsibilities
- Map the flow before drawing a screen: what happens, in what order, and what can go wrong
- Wireframe, then design the finished screens once the structure is agreed
- Design the full set of states, not the happy path alone
- Build and maintain the components so an application stays consistent as it grows
- Watch real people use it, and change what confused them
Requirements
- A portfolio with flows and reasoning in it, not only finished screens
- You can explain a decision by what it was solving
- Strong Figma, including components and variants
- You design for the edge cases: long names, empty lists, slow connections, errors
- You have handed work to developers and stayed involved while it was built
Useful, not required
- You have run usability sessions, even informal ones
- You have designed something used daily rather than visited once
- You can prototype an interaction rather than describing it
Tools
Figma, FigJam, Maze or similar, Hotjar or Clarity, Notion. The licences and subscriptions the job needs are paid for, and knowing every one of these already is not expected.
Your first three months
- Month 1. Flows and wireframes on a live project, reviewed before any visual work starts.
- Month 2. You own the design of an application end to end, including its component set.
- Month 3. You set how product work is scoped here, and what gets tested before it is built.
