About the role

A store is judged on completed orders, so this role lives at the checkout end: payment methods that work on a Malaysian phone, shipping rules that match how the client really ships, and a basket that does not lose people at the last screen.

You also keep stores running after launch. Stock, tax, plugin conflicts and a payment gateway that changed its API are the ordinary week.

This role is open on a rolling basis, so applications are read as they arrive rather than after a closing date.

People in this role work on Seed Light's E-commerce Development projects.

Responsibilities

  • Build stores in WooCommerce, from the catalogue to the checkout
  • Set up payments, shipping rules, tax and order emails
  • Fix the basket and checkout steps where orders are being lost
  • Connect stores to stock, delivery and accounting systems
  • Keep live stores updated without breaking a running business

Requirements

  • You have launched WooCommerce stores that take real money
  • You know the data model: products, variations, orders, coupons, taxes
  • You write PHP and extend Woo with hooks rather than editing it
  • You have debugged a payment gateway that was failing quietly
  • You place a full test order before calling anything done

Nice to have

  • You have worked with gateways such as Billplz, iPay88 or Stripe
  • You have handled a store migration without losing orders
  • You have built product feeds for Google Shopping or Meta

Tools

WooCommerce, WordPress, PHP, MySQL, Stripe, Google Merchant Center, Git. The licences and subscriptions the job needs are paid for, and knowing every one of these already is not expected.

Your first three months

  • Month 1. Fixes and small features on live client stores, with a full test order on each.
  • Month 2. You build a store from catalogue to checkout and take it live.
  • Month 3. You own how stores are built here, and you audit the checkout on every one.

The role is mainly focused on WooCommerce. Shopify appears occasionally, so experience with it is useful but is not the centre of the job.

Stock and operations form a substantial part of the WooCommerce developer role. A store showing the wrong stock can cost the client real orders, so the work includes connecting the shop to the way the business actually handles its catalogue, stock rules, checkout and payments.

Product copy and photography sit with the content and design roles, so the WooCommerce developer does not need to produce them. Your application should instead show how you build the store around supplied product writing and images while keeping the catalogue and buying process working properly.

The balance between new builds and maintenance varies with what is in the pipeline. A store launch is intense for a few weeks, and that store then needs ongoing support for as long as it runs.

A broken live store is checked promptly during business hours because customers may be unable to order. The first job is to find the affected step, limit further damage and restore a safe checkout. The cause and fix are then recorded.
